Donna Urquhart, an Associate Professor at Monash University, is on a mission to inspire women and girls to push their limits. Her dedication to this cause has led her to embark on an incredible journey that caught the attention of ABC Radio Melbourne’s “Melbourne Breakfast” program. Donna Urquhart, a pain scientist and ultramarathon runner, is preparing for an unprecedented challenge: an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest polar ultramarathon in Antarctica.

As Melbourne welcomes the warmth of spring, Donna Urquhart is choosing a vastly different environment for her training regimen. Instead of basking in the sun, she is training inside a cold-storage shipping container in Truganina, where temperatures plummet to a bone-chilling minus 10 degrees Celsius. This remarkable setting has become her frozen sanctuary as she prepares for her upcoming journey to Antarctica.

The “Melbourne Breakfast” program, hosted by Matt Tilley, recently featured Donna Urquhart, shedding light on her extraordinary mission and her commitment to inspire women and girls to overcome challenges and explore their potential. During the interview, Urquhart shared her motivation and the unique challenges she faces as both a pain scientist and an ultramarathon runner.

Donna Urquhart’s ultimate goal is to break the Guinness World Record for the longest polar ultramarathon, a record currently held by former politician Pat Farmer, who completed a gruelling 1157-kilometer journey from Union Glacier camp to the South Pole as part of his Pole to Pole expedition.

Antarctica is known as one of the harshest environments on Earth, with temperatures that can drop below minus 20 degrees Celsius and fierce winds that reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. These extreme conditions make Urquhart’s training and preparation all the more challenging. However, her determination and passion for her mission drive her forward.

In addition to her ultramarathon aspirations, Donna Urquhart aims to serve as a role model for girls and women who aspire to achieve greatness in their own lives. She plans to provide workshops that teach mental strategies to complement physical skills, empowering others to overcome barriers and reach their goals.
